The Biggest Names In History

Although the Earth has been around for millions of years and we have gone through so many different eras, there are a couple of names throughout history that continue to stick around. These historical figures have all done some memorable things, whether it be for the good or bad. We can almost guarantee you'll recognize all 20 of these well-known historical figures.

1. Isaac Newton

As the man who discovered gravity, Isaac Newton is a name forever etched in every history book. But while he had one of the most impressive brains of our time, helping to create the laws of motion and various theories like the theory of color, he's most known for a simple tale that's become wildly exaggerated. Because no, it's never been proven that an apple did fall on Newton's head.

2. Albert Einstein

We can comfortably say that Albert Einstein is likely the most recognized scientist to have ever lived. His name is so well known that it's used as a common nickname whenever someone does something smart. This German theoretical physicist is so much more than just a name though; he's made several groundbreaking discoveries throughout his lifetime, including being the brain behind developing the theory of relativity.

3. William Shakespeare

If you've heard of Romeo & Juliet, Julius Caesar, or Hamlet, then you've heard of William Shakespeare before. This iconic English playwright is the mastermind behind a treasure trove of incredible plays, all of which continue to be performed and studied to this day. So many of your favorite books and films are inspired by this man's stories! His writing ability was truly unparalleled and he is still often considered the greatest writer to have ever lived.

4. Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. is far more than just an important American historical figure - he's recognized across the globe for his amazing accomplishments and the footprints he left behind. As the man behind the "I Have A Dream" speech, his role as one of the leaders in the Civil Rights movement inspired more people than he could have ever imagined. His efforts during his life continue to move people around the world, even after he has passed.

5. Aristotle

Aristotle was definitely a man ahead of his time. Despite being born during ancient times, he is still considered one of the most influential philosophers to this day. His way of thinking continues to impact and shape the philosophical world. It's amazing that this Ancient Greek philosopher's theories and writings are still being studied, showcasing how brilliant his mind must've been.

6. Cleopatra

If we asked you to name one important historical figure from Ancient Egypt, we wouldn't be surprised at all if you named Cleopatra. Whether you recognize this name thanks to her many movie appearances or you studied her in school, Cleopatra was a queen to be reckoned with. Her influence on Roman politics, her relationships (namely with Julius Caesar), and the fact that she was a powerful woman during her time, makes her a name worth studying.

7. Adolf Hitler

Not much needs to be said about this man. There isn't a living soul who doesn't know about the atrocious and horrific things he has done. He will forever go down in history as an example of pure evil and how we should never treat one another.

8. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

A classical music genius, did you know Mozart was already composing music at the age of 5? Talk about impressive! But what's even more amazing is that throughout the rest of his life, he would continue to create the most beautiful music we all have the luxury of hearing. With more than 600 amazing pieces under his name, there's no question that Mozart is one of the greatest and most influential composers of all time.

9. Genghis Khan

Although Genghis Khan is a bit of a controversial figure due to his numerous violent raids in history, he is still one of the most well-known historical figures around. It's said that about 0.5% of the male population may be a very distant relative of his. While that might not seem like much, that percentage actually translates to approximately 16 million people, which is definitely no small number.

10. Napoleon Bonaparte

Despite Napoleon Bonaparte being a powerful officer and leader during the French Revolution, sadly, most people only seem to remember him for his height. At about 5' 6", he was hardly "short"! It's a little bit crazy thinking about how this stat sometimes overshadows his accomplishments. After all, people should be recognizing him as one of the most successful military generals in history, not as a short king!

11. Plato

Of course, if we're going to mention Aristotle on this list, we can't not include Plato too. After all, he was one of Aristotle's greatest teachers! Although he was born during a completely different time, his elevated way of thinking helped create the foundation for this field and shaped what philosophy is today.

12. George Washington

Despite being an icon in American history, you would be surprised by how many other people around the world recognize the name, George Washington. His legacy exists beyond the country! With many titles under his belt like American Founding Father, military general, and the first American president, his impact on the country is undeniable.

13. Alexander the Great

With the title of "the Great" following his name, it only makes sense that Alexander the Great is one of the most recognized names in history. Known for being the king of Macedon and a student of Aristotle, what he's truly known for is being one of the most strategic, intelligent, and dominant leaders in all of history. His reign was truly impressive, conquering numerous empires including Egypt, Greece, and India.

14. Charles Darwin

Now this is definitely a name you heard of before in biology class. Charlies Darwin is best known for this theory on natural selection, the idea that the strong adapt to survive, while the weak eventually get phased out. He didn't just create this groundbreaking theory though, he also made many other contributions to evolutionary biology that work as the foundation for many new concepts and theories.

15. Leonardo da Vinci

Ever heard of the Mona Lisa? That famous painting of the woman mischievously smiling was created by none other than Leonardo da Vinci, one of the greatest artists of all time. Though that's definitely his most notable work, other famous artworks he's created include The Last Supper and the Vitruvian Man. What's amazing is that he wasn't just a painter though - he was a man of the High Renaissance, a true inventor and creator.

16. Sigmund Freud

If you've ever heard of the phrase, "a Freudian slip," it's actually named after this famous psychologist, Sigmund Freud. Often coined the Father of Psychology, Freud was the brain behind psychoanalysis, a treatment that taps into our unconscious following the belief that our current struggles are shaped by past traumas and experiences.

17. Muhammad

Another prominent religious figure in history who's well known across the world is Muhammad. As a prophet for Islam, he is known for being the founder of this religion. You might also know him as the "Messenger of God", a title often associated with this influential man.

18. Julius Caesar

Whether you've heard this name thanks to Shakespeare's play or just throughout pop culture, Julius Caesar was an insanely powerful and influential Roman leader who made his mark on the world. He was a dictator to be feared, which led to his eventual downfall; his death is one of the most brutal in history - he was assassinated by a group of Roman senators who worried he was becoming too strong.

19. Ludwig van Beethoven

Beethoven is a German composer whose stunning musical creations left a massive impact on the world. Similar to Mozart, Beethoven was a child prodigy who showed a remarkable talent for music at a young age. Even to this day, his beautiful pieces continue to wow music lovers around the world. It makes him worthy of being called one of the greatest musicians to ever live.

20. Mahatma Gandhi

Known for being an icon of peace, Gandhi played a crucial role in India's path towards freedom from British control. It was his honest fight for justice and peace, combined with his nonviolent approach that captivated the hearts of people around the world. His bravery and leadership continue to be reviewed in history books to this day, although more records of his flawed character have come to light since then.
